Stay alert for fraudsters

In the last few months there has been an increase in the number of residents in Baslow and Bubnell who are regularly receiving scam and fraudulent telephone calls on both landline and mobile phones.

The advice from the Police and Neighbourhood Watch is that you should never give any personal information, especially your bank details or credit/debit card details, to anyone over the phone unless you have called them and you are 100% certain it is safe to do so.

Never press 1 or any number if requested to do so, this is another trick used to extort money from innocent victims.

Some of the most recent callers pretend to be from BT (about scam calls(, Amazon, HMRC, banks, local councils and people selling investments.

The callers are highly skilled and are desperate to steal money from you.

The successful scams are when people are caught off guard, so whenever you answer the telephone please be on high alert and treat as a possible scam. Just because they know your name and address and say they are calling you from your bank or the tax office, they may be scammers.
IF IN DOUBT PUT THE PHONE DOWN AND THEN DO NOT PICK UP THE HANDSET STRAIGHT AWAY AS THEY MAY STILL BE ON THE LINE.
