Old House Museum
A restored Tudor building in the heart of Bakewell

Set in Bakewell, in the heart of the beautiful Peak District, the Old House Museum is an original Tudor dwelling.

After nearly 500 years of continuous use, the house was rescued from demolition in the 1950s; it is an award-winning museum that hosts a wide range of artefacts telling the story of the Peak District and beyond.

WELCOME TO THE OLD HOUSE MUSEUM

What stories these walls could tell! Built in the reign of Henry VIII as a tax collector’s cottage, it was expanded into a gentleman’s residence in the Elizabethan period, complete with garderobe (Tudor toilet).

During the Industrial Revolution, it was re-purposed as mill workers’ cottages, by none other than Richard Arkwright himself who, had built his third cotton spinning mill in Bakewell.

The house retains features from all these periods, so there’s plenty of details for all architectural enthusiasts.

OUR COLLECTIONS
Our collections include Tudor artefacts, found encased in the walls, Macedonian ceremonial swords and an elephant’s foot, with all sorts hidden away in every nook and cranny.

Mostly donated by local residents, there’s a story behind every one of these artefacts, linking them to this part of Derbyshire.

VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

If you would like to make new friends, work in an amazing historic building and help a great cause, then we would be delighted to welcome you as a volunteer.

With a wide range of roles on offer, there’s something for everyone and you can commit to as much or as little as you’d like. All our volunteers receive a full induction so that you are confident and happy in your role.

We keep in touch with our volunteers through regular newsletters and emails. Social events are organised twice a year, at the beginning and end of each season, to say thank you for all their hard work

If you would like to learn more about volunteering at the Old House Museum, call Anita Spencer on: 01629 813642 for an informal chat.
