Baslow Environment Group update

Dear Friends

Spring has finally arrived and is rapidly turning to summer. And so it’s a good time to revisit the Environment Group activities, to review what has happened, to discuss future plans and to catch up with each other.

So we’re planning our next meeting on Thursday 4th June at 7.30 in the Devonshire Arms.

This newsletter is a taster of the things we’ll be discussing. In it you can find:

  • An update on the Hydro Scheme
  • Feedback on the bus survey and a project to slow traffic coming through the village
  • A brilliant opportunity for a guided tour around Bubnell Cliff Farm
  • The possibility of setting up a Baslow in Bloom project
  • A note about the next Repair Cafe on Saturday 6 June

Please come to the meeting to hear more about these projects and share your thoughts. I really hope to see you there.

Best wishes

Graham

The Hydro Project
Slowly but surely we’re inching our way towards local electricity generation.

Over the last few months we’ve been working hard to gain all the permissions we need from landowners as well as permissions from statutory agencies. We’ve been commissioning surveys to find out the geological and structural issues we need to solve. And we’ve been seeking sources of funding.

As well as multiple barriers to haul ourselves over there have been moments of real encouragement as we realise just how far we’ve come.

Come and hear about it!

Bus survey and traffic reduction

You’ll remember that Tony organised a bus survey to help build an evidence base to take to bus operators and the regional mayor. You can find the results on the Environment Group website here

https://www.baslowenvironmentgroup.org/transport

We are also figuring out what we can do to reduce the impact of the HGVs travelling through the village.

Other villages have succeeded in getting change, it is possible but it takes commitment and perseverance.

Can we generate enough of these qualities in Baslow? Come and share your views!

Guided tour around Bubnell Cliff Farm

As well as building up a pedigree rare breed of Longhorn cattle, Tom Mills is committed to innovative nature friendly farming practices.

He is offering 2 guided tours around the farm so that local people can learn more. This is a brilliant opportunity, not to be missed

The tours are
10am on Saturday 6 June
2pm on Wednesday 24 June

Each will last about 1.5 hours and will entail walking a fair distance around the farm. If you’d like to book a place contact Graham Dale: info@bepl.org.uk

Can we do a Baslow in Bloom?
I’d be really interested to discuss if this might be possible.

The RHS “In Bloom” competition is no longer about planting hanging baskets and roundabouts. Now it is much more about sustainability as well as beauty and about whole community participation.

It is about practical action which can bring a community together. I’ve been talking with people in the village and I think it might be possible. Come along and let’s have a chat about it!

Finally, there is a Repair Cafe on Saturday 6th June 10.00-1.00pm in St Anne’s

All manner of electrical and household items are repaired by our skilled volunteers. Blunt tools are sharpened and clothes get repaired.

Home made cakes and tea/coffee while you wait. All free, just a donation to charity.

Come on down with your blunt, broken and torn stuff!
