Derbyshire Police has reported that they’re seeing reports of people going door-to-door offering to lay tarmac or carry out work at a “cheap price” because they “happen to be in the area” or “have left over tarmac from a previous job in the area”.
In many cases this leads to:
⚠️ Prices suddenly increasing by thousands of pounds
⚠️ Property or valuables being taken
⚠️ Intimidation or threats
⚠️ Poor or unfinished work – If it sounds too good to be true it usually is
Before agreeing to any work with any contractor:
✅ Check ID and company details
✅ Get written quotes
✅ Don’t be pressured into quick decisions
✅ Never hand over cash upfront
If you’re approached and feel something isn’t right:
- If safe to do so, note vehicle registrations and descriptions
- Report on 101, or 999 if you feel threatened or in immediate danger
- Or report online via https://orlo.uk/report_a_crime_lvTM6
