New Mobile Libraries

An announcement from Derbyshire County Council

“The new mobile library vehicles are almost ready, we are just awaiting the internal shelves to be installed for the books, and for the digital connection devices to arrive. Once those are fitted and tested, we will be ready to start the new service. We are hoping that will be later this month [June 2026].

“In the interim, we are hoping to borrow a delivery vehicle from Fleet Services to provide a “book and borrow” service, where the driver contacts users in advance and drops off books to them, a bit like the Home Library Service.

“Regarding ordering books, because we are moving the mobile libraries over to the same system that we use in our branch libraries, we are in the process of adding the mobile library routes onto the online system. The option to choose the mobile libraries and route will be restored to our online catalogue shortly.

‘The new mobile libraries are smaller and lower than the previous mobile library vehicles, which should make them easier to access for most customers as there is a smaller step up. The vehicles don’t come with passenger lifts because of their size, but for any customers who are unable to use the vehicles we can offer the Home Library Service.

‘Details of the service are available here: Home library service – Derbyshire County Council. We will be monitoring how the service operates, and feedback from customers, to ensure that we remain as accessible as possible.”
