B6001 Grindleford-Hathersage Road closure

From 3-30 March the B6001 Grindleford to Hathersage road will be closed to all traffic, pedestrians and cyclists from Monday, 3 March for a major week repair programme.

The repairs are part of a three-year project, which started last spring, to rebuild 100 metres of the 100-year-old retaining wall to prevent the road collapsing down the steep bank.

The existing retaining wall was built without any secure foundations, using a dry stone wall method of construction, which has limited strength in the face of today’s much heavier traffic volumes.

Diversion route
A signed diversion route will be in place using the B6001, B6521 and A6187. Full details are available on One Network at https://one.network/?GB140638434

The repairs
Highway inspections have revealed large cracks to the road surface, caused by the gradual sinking and collapse of the retaining wall, shown by the first photo. The second photo shows the lean to the retaining wall retaining wall the vibration form traffic and wet weather conditions.
The existing stone will be reused to build a new, one metre high wall, using mortar with extensive concrete foundations up to half a metre deep.

Safety forces complete closure of the road
Due to the narrow width of the B6001 and the space needed to complete the repairs where the wall is at risk of collapse, there will unfortunately be no pedestrian access along this part of the road, to maintain public safety.
